Amgueddfa Treftadaeth Swtan

When the National Trust bought the land surrounding the ruin of Swtan, as part of their coastal footpath project, local people wanted to save the cottage.

With the help of the Wales Co-operative and Menter Mon, Cyfeillion Swtan was registered as a Company Limited by guarantee -3531642- on 6th March 1998. Initially there were ten Directors.

The Mission Statement – The restoration and preservation of the cottage Swtan for the benefit of the general public and the further education of the general public by opening as a museum.

The group were then able to access European funding for the restoration, through the Rural Development Plan.

In September 1999, when the restoration of the shell of the building was completed, National Trust leased the property to Cyfeillion Swtan for 20 years.

An appeal to local people brought in generous donations of Family treasures consisting of furnishing, tools etc and the interior was completed with wooden partitions and iron range.

The Museum was opened to the public in May 2000.

Charitable status was achieved - 1138229 – 6th October 2010

Cyfeillion Swtan continue to manage the business and care for maintenance and presentation to the present day. Over the years they have worked to develop Swtan as a valued educational resource, heritage museum, and tourist attraction, which offers part time employment and volunteering opportunities and contributes to the local economy.

Volunteers, who can give some of their time and managerial or practical skills are always welcome.
